Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No referral is required. You can book directly with us at any time. A GP referral is only needed if you wish to use a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan.
Which areas do you service?
We cover Sydney's Eastern Suburbs including Bondi, Vaucluse, Paddington, Double Bay, Woollahra, Rose Bay, Randwick, Coogee, Bronte, Maroubra, and surrounds. We also see patients at OptiSports in Barangaroo.
What are your hours?
We offer home visits 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm. Same-week appointments are often available.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes. We accept all major Australian health funds with extras cover that includes physiotherapy. You can claim on the spot using HICAPS - you only pay the gap.
How much does a home visit cost?
An initial assessment is $180 (60 mins). Follow-up consultations are $140 (45 mins). A running assessment is $200 (60 mins). All fees include travel to your home across the Eastern Suburbs.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your initial session runs for 60 minutes. Seth will take a detailed history of your condition, perform a physical assessment to identify the root cause, and develop a personalised treatment plan. Hands-on treatment typically begins in the same session.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies depending on the condition and how long it has been present. Many acute issues such as a stiff neck or mild back strain improve significantly within 2–4 sessions. More complex or chronic conditions may require 6–10 sessions or an ongoing management program. You'll get a clear expectation at your first appointment.
Can you treat elderly or immobile patients?
Absolutely. This is one of the key advantages of mobile physiotherapy. We regularly treat older adults who have difficulty travelling to a clinic, patients recovering from hip or knee replacements, and anyone whose mobility is limited by their condition. Treatment is adapted to suit your physical capacity.
Do you treat sports injuries?
Yes - sports injury rehabilitation is one of our specialties. Our principal physiotherapist Seth Hirschowitz represented the Australian Physiotherapy Association at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has worked with professional teams across soccer, basketball, and cricket.
What should I do for lower back pain in the first few days?
The most important thing is to keep moving. Bed rest slows recovery. Gentle walking, light stretching, and continuing normal activities as much as your pain allows is protective, not harmful. Apply heat after the first 24 hours to reduce muscle spasm, take anti-inflammatories if tolerated, and break up prolonged sitting every 30–45 minutes. If pain is severe, radiating into the leg, or not improving after 3–4 days, book an assessment.
When is back pain serious and requires urgent attention?
Most back pain is mechanical and not dangerous. However, seek same-day emergency care if you have changes to bladder or bowel function, sudden weakness in both legs, or reduced sensation in the inner thighs or groin, as these may indicate cauda equina syndrome. See a physio or GP promptly if you have constant pain that doesn't ease with any position, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, or fever alongside back pain.
Does core strengthening fix back pain?
The link is real but widely misunderstood. Sit-ups and crunches actually increase pressure on the discs and are rarely helpful. What works is training the deep stabilisers (transversus abdominis, multifidus, and pelvic floor) through exercises like dead bugs, bird dogs, and side planks that require you to maintain a neutral spine under load. A physio assessment identifies the specific deficits rather than prescribing a generic core program.
I woke up with a stiff, painful neck. What should I do?
Resist the urge to stay still. Gentle slow movement, turning the head side to side and nodding up and down to the first point of resistance, is more effective at reducing stiffness than rest. Apply a heat pack for 15–20 minutes. Avoid driving if rotation is significantly restricted. If it keeps happening, the underlying cause is usually a combination of thoracic stiffness, weak deep neck flexors, and sustained screen posture during the day, and a physio can address these specifically.
What's the difference between a disc bulge and spinal stenosis?
Both can cause leg pain but they behave differently. A disc bulge is typically worse with sitting and bending forward, and better with walking, and it often affects younger patients with a more acute onset. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, more common from your 50s onwards, and causes leg heaviness or aching that gets worse with walking and better when you sit or lean forward. Both respond well to physiotherapy in most cases.
How long does ACL rehabilitation take?
A thorough ACL rehabilitation program typically takes 9–12 months before return to pivoting sport. The first 1–2 weeks focus on swelling control and regaining range of motion, followed by progressive strengthening, neuromuscular control, and sport-specific drills. Return-to-sport decisions should be based on passing objective criteria, including strength symmetry and hop tests, not just time. Re-injury rates are high when athletes return too early.
Can physiotherapy help prevent injuries, not just treat them?
Yes, and this is an underused application of physiotherapy. A physio can identify movement patterns that put you at risk before they become painful: asymmetries in hip strength, restricted ankle mobility, poor rotator cuff control. Regular screening and targeted exercise prescription, even when you're healthy, reduces injury rates and extends how long your body performs well. It's physiotherapy as a performance tool, not just a repair shop.
What conditions does physiotherapy treat?
Physiotherapy treats a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and sports-related conditions. Common presentations include lower back and neck pain, disc bulges and sciatica, sports injuries (ACL, rotator cuff, hamstring tears), post-surgical rehabilitation, arthritis, work injuries, balance and falls in older adults, breathing mechanics issues, and chronic pain management. If you're unsure whether your condition is appropriate, contact us and we'll advise.
