Dry Needling in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs: What to Expect
Dry needling is one of the most effective tools for releasing stubborn muscle tightness and reducing referred pain. Here's what it involves, what it feels like, and when it's the right choice.
Dry needling is a technique where fine acupuncture-style needles are inserted into trigger points — tight, hypersensitive knots within muscle tissue — to release them and reduce pain. It's distinct from acupuncture in that it's based on anatomy and neuroscience rather than traditional Chinese medicine principles, and it's targeted specifically at musculoskeletal dysfunction.
What conditions benefit from dry needling
- Persistent neck and upper back tightness, particularly from desk work
- Tension-type headaches originating from the cervical spine or upper traps
- Gluteal tightness and hip pain, including referred pain down the leg
- Calf tightness and plantar fasciitis
- Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff-related pain
- Low back pain with associated muscle spasm
What it feels like
Most patients feel a dull ache or a brief involuntary muscle twitch — called a local twitch response — when the needle hits the trigger point. This twitch is actually a good sign: it means the needle has engaged the right spot. Some people find the sensation mildly uncomfortable; others barely notice it. The needle is very fine (much thinner than an injection needle) and the sensation typically passes within seconds.
Is it safe?
Yes. When performed by a trained physiotherapist, dry needling is a low-risk procedure. You may experience mild soreness in the treated area for 12–24 hours afterward — similar to the feeling after a deep massage. Ice or heat can help. Serious complications are extremely rare when sterile, single-use needles are used by a qualified practitioner.
How it fits into your treatment
Dry needling is rarely used in isolation. It works best as one component of a broader treatment plan — used to release tight tissue quickly so that exercise-based rehabilitation and manual therapy can be more effective. If a muscle is too guarded to respond to stretching or strengthening, dry needling can reset it, creating a window for more productive rehab work.
